Apple iPhone 6 coming in September

While the Apple iPhone 6 launch date remains elusive, there are signs that its supply chain is gearing up to begin production of the smartphone.

According to Digitimes, Simplo Technology and Desay Battery Technology have received orders to supply parts for the iPhone 6.
Mass production of the phone has yet to begin, but it is expected to start soon, the report added.
Analysts have also said that it is likely that Apple will launch its next iPhone in the third quarter.
“For the first time, our checks indicated volume component orders for iPhone 6,” said Andy Hargreaves, an analyst at Pacific Crest.

“We expect significant component orders to begin in July, which is consistent with public availability of the device in late September or October,” he wrote in a research note Monday.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier now available for Android and iOS

captain_america_winter_soldier_released_google_play_store.jpg

Gameloft has finally released its much talked-about mobile game, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, for Android and iOS via the Google Play store and Apple iTunes App Store. The game is not yet listed on the Windows Phone Store, though it had been announced for the platform.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier has arrived days before the release of its movie version. Last month, when the teaser video of the gaming app was revealed by Gameloft, we assumed it would arrive along with the film on 4 April.

The game lets users play as Captain America, who is supported by a small team of S.H.I.E.L.D to fight against a number of superpower villains - Taskmaster, King Cobra, Puff Adder, the Winter Soldier and others. The users can borrow some help from the Falcon or the Black Widow if they find themselves in a tough spot in the game when fighting against the villains and other enemies.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier game also includes an asynchronous multiplayer feature with which users can play against each other through different clans. One can compete on league leaderboards and can earn extra rewards in limited-time events.

Different fighting techniques and Captain America suits can be unlocked as users progress through the game. The mobile game's art and graphics are inspired by comic books.

Unfortunately, the 'demo version' on Android only lets users play two levels for free, after which users would have to go through some in-app purchases to continue. The iOS version of Captain America: The Winter Soldier however, is a paid $4.19 app, unlocked from the get-go.

The Captain America: The Winter Soldier is sized at 20MB (initial install) and requires Android 4.0 Ice cream Sandwich OS version to run. The application, as seen on the Google Play Store listing page, is getting some mixed reviews from the users who have downloaded the game.

On the iTunes App Store, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is listed at 93.6MB, and is compatible with devices running iOS 7.0 or higher.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Zoom specifications leak again

samsung_galaxy_s5_zoom_specs_leak_polish_website.jpg

Details of the Samsung Galaxy S5 Zoom have been leaked online for the second with some new information on specifications and its design. However this new leak has some specifications that are slightly different from what was first shared on the internet.
The latest news comes from a Polish website, Galaktyczny.pl, which mentioned that the smartphone was shown in a conference between some of the Samsung officials and was strictly confidential. According to the website, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Zoom is slimmer than the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom and that the smartphone's "lens is much better hidden in the casing." The camera is of course the main feature of the new handset, and is said to have a 20-megapixel sensor, 10x optical zoom, image stabilisation and also a Xenon flash. Aside from these imaging features, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Zoom is also expected to include a physical camera shutter button and a throttle to control the zoom, both of which make it easier to take pictures.
The screen of the Samsung Galaxy S5 Zoom is rumoured to be a 4.8-inch display covering almost the entire front of the device. The handset uses the Android KitKat OS, and it is said to be efficient and faster as it might be powered by a quad-core processor clocked at 1.6GHz paired with 2GB of RAM.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 Zoom smartphone was first spotted in a GFXBench test earlier this month. Interestingly, there are some differences in the specifications in the two leaks.
While the Android version, screen size and RAM remain the same, the benchmarks revealed the smartphone to feature a 720p HD screen, 1.3GHz hexa-core (Samsung Exynos 5 Hexa) CPU and a Mali-T624 GPU. Additionally, the earlier leak suggested that the Samsung Galaxy S5 Zoom has a 19-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera that can record Full-HD videos. On the storage front, the Samsung SM-C115 (rumoured S5 Zoom) device is listed with two reported storage capacities, which likely means that a dedicated memory card slot will be present, too.

Google partners Ray-Ban maker for Glass eyewear

google_glass_new_frames_official_635.jpg

Google on Monday said it is joining forces with the frame giant behind Ray-Ban and other brands to create and sell Glass Internet-linked eyewear in the US.
The California-based technology titan billed the partnership with Luxottica as its "biggest step yet into the emerging smart eyewear market."
Luxottica brands include Oakley, Alain Mikli, Ray-Ban, and Vogue-Eyewear.
The announcement in a Google blog post came as the web titan sought to burnish the Glass image ahead of its expected debut in the US market this year.
Google last week sent out a release to debunk Glass myths including that it invades privacy, distracts wearers, and is for "technology-worshipping geeks."
"If someone wants to secretly record you, there are much, much better cameras out there than one you wear conspicuously on your face and that lights up every time you give a voice command, or press a button," Google said.
"If a company sought to design a secret spy device, they could do a better job than Glass."
Google in February gave early adopters of its Internet-connected eyewear a bit of advice: don't be "Glassholes."
It was the final suggestion in a recommended code of conduct posted online for software developers and others taking part in an Explorer program providing early access to Google Glass.
The Internet titan appeared intent on avoiding the kinds of caustic run-ins that have seen some Glass wearers tossed from eateries, pubs or other establishments due to concerns over camera capabilities built into devices.
Don't be "creepy or rude (aka, a "Glasshole")," Google said in a guide posted online for Explorer program members.
"Respect others and if they have questions about Glass don't get snappy."
Google suggest Glass wearers be polite and offer demonstrations to possibly win over the wary. Glass fans were advised it is proper to follow the same rules set down for smartphone use in businesses.
"If you're asked to turn your phone off, turn Glass off as well," Google said.

Purported pictures of Nokia Lumia 830 leak online

Lumia-830.jpg

A new 'Nokia Lumia smartphone' has made an appearance in the wild. Chinese website WPDang has posted several pictures of a new smartphone that it claims is the Nokia Lumia 830, a likely successor of the Nokia Lumia 710.
Nokia Lumia 710 is mid-range Windows Phone smartphone, which has a 3.7-inch touchscreen, 1.4GHz processor and a 5-megapixel rear camera. It runs on Windows Phone 7.5 and is expected to get an update to Windows Phone 7.8 soon.
According to WPDang, Nokia Lumia 830 too is expected to be a mid-range smartphone running on Windows Phone 8. It is expected to be cheaper than the recently showcased Nokia Lumia 820. The only information available with the website right now is that Nokia Lumia 830 will be available in five colour options - black, white, red, yellow and green. It did not post any hardware specifications or availability details. The pictures themselves show a smartphone that looks very similar to the Nokia Lumia 820.
Nokia had showcased Nokia Lumia 820 and Lumia 920 smartphones in September 2012. Nokia Lumia 920 is its flagship smartphone and Nokia Lumia 820 is a mid-range offering and both are expected to be available in India this month.

Nokia Lumia 630 dual-SIM and Lumia 930 tipped for April launch

nokia_lumia_630_moneypenny_evleaks.jpg

Nokia is rumoured to announce its anticipated Windows Phone handsets, the Nokia Lumia 630 (thought to be codenamed Moneypenny) and Nokia Lumia 930 (thought to be codenamed Martini) in the upcoming Microsoft Build 2014 conference in April as the launch devices for Windows Phone 8.1, the update to Microsoft's mobile operating system that has for a while been expected to be unveiled at the event.
Earlier this month, it was rumoured that Nokia might reveal its 'Martini' handset on the firm's 19 April 2014 event, alongside other devices such as Nokia Lumia 1820, Lumia 1525 and Lumia 1520 V.
A report by My Nokia Blog quotes a source close to Nokia who claims the Lumia 630 will arrive in both single-SIM and dual-SIM variants (making it the first dual-SIM Windows Phone). It is further said to arrive without a rear camera flash, hinting it will fall in the budget segment.
No details have been reported about the Lumia 930 (Martini) handset, expect for the expected Build conference launch. The long-rumoured Windows Phone device codenamed 'Goldfinger' has been mentioned in the report however, as possibly due to launch at the same event, as the company's flagship device.
Last year, the Goldfinger handset has been previously rumoured to be the firm's flagship device, which would flaunt Nokia's '3D Touch' technology. Reports suggest that the rumoured '3D Touch' feature uses device's sensors to detect interactions that are off-the-glass. The Nokia Goldfinger is said to come hand gesture support which will let users navigate on a phone without touching the display, while other gestures under consideration include flipping and scrolling.

Google Nexus 8 to feature 8.9-inch 'high performance' display

nexus-7-2013-india-launch-635.jpg

Google is said to be planning to release a Nexus 8 tablet later this year, with reports indicating the production of the tablet will commence in the month of July or August.
The rumoured Nexus 8 is now reported to feature a 'high performance' 8.9-inch display, according to Rhoda Alexander, the director of tablet and monitor research at IHS Technology, as reported by Cnet.
The proposed Google Nexus 8 tablet is said to arrive in limited units compared to its predecessor, theGoogle Nexus 7, and is said to sport a "premium price tag to support the specifications."
As far as the price of the rumoured Nexus 8 goes, Alexander says that she "would not be surprised if it is higher than $299," which roughly amounts to Rs. 18,300, and which will definitely shoot up after the inclusion of VAT and other taxes. HTC is said to be the sole manufacturer of the Nexus 8 tablet.
The $299 mark for the rumoured Nexus 8 tablet would make the device fall in the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 range. Since the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 sports a 2560x1600 pixel resolution screen, one can expect at least the same from the Nexus 8 tablet.
A similar report coming from Digitimes indicates the Nexus 8 device will sport a 2K resolution or higher. While Digitimes is considered as a hit-and-miss for rumour accuracy, it does back up the information with market analyst IHS Technology.

Octa-core processors: Real advantage or marketing myth?

octacore_mediatek_diagram_mediatek.jpg

Just as processor clock speeds were once considered the sole measure of a PC's performance in the 90s, core count is becoming today's default indicator of smartphone power. While dual-core devices were all the rage just a short while ago, customers are now demanding quad-core at the very least, and manufacturers are racing to one-up the competition by pushing out phones which have octa-core processors in them.
Enabling this phenomenon is MediaTek, a manufacturer of ARM-based processors which, until the recent spate of low-budget Android devices, had managed to maintain a pretty low profile. MediaTek's processors are based on the industry-standard ARM architecture, but are generally not as powerful or as integrated as those from more well-known competitors such as Qualcomm.
MediaTek offers a variety of models, most of them aimed at the lower end of the smartphone market. However, they've been quick to sense the growing interest in boasting about core count, and have developed an octa-core chip, the MT6592. So far, three phones have launched in India with this processor: the Intex Aqua Octa, the Wickedleak Wammy Passion X, and the Micromax Canvas Knight. Karbonn has also recently announced the Titanium Octane and Titanium Octane Plus models, which will join this exclusive club.

Is eight better than four?
Various ARM licensees have been offering eight-core configurations for a while now, but their approach is to have one cluster of four high-powered cores which don't prioritise energy efficiency, and another of four low-powered cores which are much easier on the battery. Depending on the amount of work the processor is called upon to do at any point, it can rapidly switch between the two clusters.
ARM calls this arrangement big.LITTLE, and claims that it can be used to achieve far better control over power efficiency than is possible with clock speed scaling alone. The high-powered and low-powered cores do not generally operate at the same time, although this is possible in certain implementations and is known as heterogenous multiprocessing.
MediaTek, on the other hand, is proud to boast that its MT6592 is a "true octa-core" chip, in which eight cores of the same design can operate simultaneously. While eight simultaneous cores would obviously be able to deliver superior performance to four, Mediatek's building blocks themselves aren't the most powerful. The architecture is also heavily dependent on the way the OS and applications are written.
Ideally, having more processor cores should allow a device to be more responsive, which means multitasking should feel snappier. Applications shouldn't have to wait as long for the processor to allocate resources to them, and cores not in use should be able to shut down completely in order to minimise their impact on battery life.
conclusion
Ultimately, we can see that "octa-core" isn't just a marketing term. There are clear advantages to having the spare processing power, and MediaTek seems to have found a way to implement an eight-core SoC within a budget, and without killing battery life. While Qualcomm might not have had much to worry about before, it also seems as though eight weaker cores can hold their own against four stronger ones; a fact which is already leading to some interesting market dynamics in the sub-Rs. 20,000 price range.
So what's next? Will MediaTek refine its products and processes enough to take on the high-end Snapdragon 600 and flagship-class Snapdragon 800 series? Will Indian brands ride on MediaTek's coattails and start pushing into the premium space and create pricing headaches for multinational brands? Will Qualcomm lose its position as the best vendor for top-tier smartphone and tablet processors? We can't wait to find out.

iPhone 6 tipped with 389ppi 'Ultra-Retina' display, 5.59mm thickness

apple-staff-635.jpg+

New rumours have surfaced online for Apple's upcoming iteration of the iPhone handset. The rumours hint the iPhone 6 will arrive with a much thinner body, powerful processor and a higher pixel density screen.
The rumours come from Sonny Dickson, the Australian teen who rose to fame in the build up to the release of iPhone 5s with what turned out to be largely accurate leaks. Dickson, in one of his four tweets on the subject, said, "iPhone 6 will be 0.22 inches thick #JustSaying." The measurement barely comes around to 5.59mm, which is just 0.04mm thicker than what is claimed to be the world's slimmest handset, the Gionee Elife S5.5.
Dickson also mentioned the inclusion of an Ultra-Retina screen, which will pack 389 pixels per inch (ppi). The tipster furthermore talked about the chipset that might arrive in the next Apple iPhone. "The new Apple A8 processor will run at 2.6GHz #JustSaying," his tweet read.

Facebook starts rolling out video ads in News Feeds

facebook_ipad_reuters.jpg

Facebook on Thursday began weaving video ads into people's news feeds at the leading online social network in a move to grab revenue from the lucrative television market.
Premium Video Ads that Facebook began testing at the end of last year are being gradually integrated into accounts of its more than 1.2 billion members, product marketing manager Susan Buckner said in an online post.
"Brands now have another way of engaging people on Facebook with compelling video experiences," Buckner said.
"We'll roll out Premium Video Ads slowly and monitor how people interact with them."
The 15-second video ads play automatically when they pop-up in news feeds and are designed for advertisers who want to reach large audiences with sight, sound and motion, according to Facebook..

Windows Phone 8.1's purported new Photos + Camera app seen in leaked video

windows_phone_81_camera_interface_leaked_youtube.jpg

new detailed three-minute video has surface that supposedly showcases the new camera user interface and other photo settings in the upcoming Windows Phone 8.1 update.
In the alleged Windows Phone 8.1 walkthrough video by Unleash the Phones, we notice that the Photos app has been changed to Photos + Camera app. The new application includes options for managing tile settings for photos, camera settings, default camera app, photo settings, auto-upload and reset camera.
The spotted tile settings in the leaked Windows Phone 8.1 video seem to allow users to choose which category of images should be displayed on the live tile icon on the home screen. Users can choose from all photos, favourite photos and single photo categories or can go for the shuffling option, which picks up images randomly from any category to show on the live tile.
The camera settings seen in the purported walkthrough video has three sub-options from which users can chose only one at a time. The first option lets the user wake-up the device when the dedicated camera button is long-pressed. The second option enables the user to 'prevent accidental camera launch when phone is launched' followed by the third option letting the users share their location info along with the clicked images.
One can also choose the default camera launch app, which by default is set to 'Microsoft Camera'.
Also seen is the photo settings option for storing the photos according to the time and location, and the auto-upload feature that lets the user automatically upload photos on the cloud storage (One Drive).

Google redesigns search results on desktop for a 'cleaner look'

google_redesigned_search_screenshot.jpg

Web surfing through the Internet's main gateway now looks slightly different on personal computers, thanks to a few cosmetic changes to Google's search engine this week.
The tweaks to the way Google's search results appear on desktop and laptop computers mirror a makeover on smartphones and tablets introduced a few months ago.
The new presentation increases font sizes and removes the underlines below the blue links of each search result on PCs. Ads appearing along the top and the right-hand panel of the results page no longer are presented in boxes shaded in blue and yellow. The marketing pitches are now marked by small ad tags to distinguish them from the rest of the results.
Google Inc. rolled out the new design on PCs with little fanfare, even though it will be seen by almost everyone who searches for information on personal computers. That's because Google processes about two out of every three search requests made on PCs.
The company's lead search designer, Jon Wiley, announced the makeover Wednesday with a post on hisGoogle Plus page.

samsung_galaxy_siii_mini_value_edition_gsminfo_nl.jpg

Samsung has been famous for launching its flagship smartphones in a number of variants. Continuing the tradition, the South Korean manufacturer looks all set to release the Galaxy S III mini Value Edition, which is a compact variant of the 2012 flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S III.
The Samsung Galaxy S III mini Value Edition is now listed as available in Netherlands at various online merchants for EUR 180, which translates to roughly Rs. 15,300. The phone is however, not listed on Samsung's official Dutch site.
The smartphone was first spotted by Gsminfo which claims that the Galaxy S III mini Value Edition features upgraded innards, when compared to the Galaxy S III mini that was launched in October 2012.
The Galaxy S III mini Value Edition runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean out-of-the-box, whereas the Galaxy S III mini was based on Android 4.1.
The Galaxy S III mini Value Edition, much like its sibling, comes with a 4-inch display with a resolution of 480x800 (WVGA) pixels. It is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core Cortex A9 (unspecified chipset) processor, alongside 1GB of RAM.

Apple iWork brings simplicity to managing documents

Apple iWork brings simplicity to documents
Microsoft's Office is the go-to software package for creating and sharing documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Google's Docs has emerged as a good, free alternative for lightweight tasks. But what's often overlooked is Apple's iWork.
Last fall, the iWork applications for the Mac - Pages for word processing, Numbers for spreadsheets and Keynote for presentations - got their first major update since 2009 and now work better with iPhone and iPad versions.
Apple also developed an online version that can work on Windows computers and let several people collaborate on a single document more easily.
Apple's iWork won't replace Office, and Google Docs is better in some ways. But after using iWork for a few months, I've come to appreciate the ways it simplifies work. It became my primary way of writing news stories at last week's Mobile World Congress wireless show in Barcelona, Spain.
The best part: iWork is free with the purchase of new Apple devices (the Mac version with new Macs and the iOS apps with new iPhones or iPads). Once you get it, you can install iWork on older devices. Otherwise, each of the three apps costs $20 for Macs and $10 for mobile devices, or $90 for everything. That's a one-time fee. To use Office on multiple devices, Microsoft charges $100 a year.

USING IWORK ON DESKTOPS AND LAPTOPS:
With both Office and Google Docs, you primarily deal with a toolbox of options at the top. That's where you go to change fonts or adjust line spacing. With iWork, many of those options are moved to a palette on the right, which fills in the computer's horizontal screen much better.
More importantly, those options change depending on context. For basic text, you get basic formatting options such as font and size. Insert a chart, and you can adjust the gap between columns. Drag and drop a photo onto a Pages document, and you get image-editing tools such as cropping and color adjustment.
In a sense, the available features come to you, and you're invited to explore.
With spreadsheets, the palette on the right side presents all 267 options for formulas and calculations, arranged in categories. Click on any one for a full description of what it does and how it works.
With Excel, I use no more than a half-dozen formulas, mostly because I don't know about the others or can't be bothered to figure out the syntax. With Numbers, I choose one from a list - let's say, "ROUND". I'm then shown where to enter the number to round and the number of decimal places to use.
Another neat feature: Select a column of numbers - let's say, 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42. The app will automatically calculate the results using five of the most-used formulas - such as 108 for "SUM" and 18 for "AVERAGE".

USING IWORK ELSEWHERE:
Although some options and templates are missing from iPhones and iPads, Apple does a good job of keeping the iOS apps consistent with the Mac applications. The main change: Instead of finding options to the right, you tap various buttons to access them.
In fact, many long-time iWork users have complained that Apple adapted the Mac version too much to achieve consistency with iOS. Some features, such as using files in Rich Text Format, went away. Apple promises to bring some of the features back in the coming months.
I would rather have that consistency.
With Office, the smartphone app is so bare-bones, I've hardly used it. And there's no Office app at all for iPads and Android tablets; you're limited to a Web version that requires a constant Internet connection. Microsoft wants to preserve Office as a selling point for its Windows tablets.
With iWork, documents are shared and synced through Apple's iCloud storage service. Changes made on the Mac show up on the iPad within seconds. Line and page breaks stay the same.
That consistency extends to some degree to the Web version, known as iWork for iCloud. Formatting remains the same. But because it's still in a "beta" test version, the Web version lacks key features. You can't track changes or view and leave comments, for instance. New features have been coming every month or two, so expect improvements over time.
Unfortunately, there's no app or iCloud support for devices running the rival Android system from Google. And for Windows, you must stay online to use iCloud.

COLLABORATING:
One big omission with iWork had been the ability to work with others on the same documents. With the Web version, you can now send others a link from the Web or any of the apps. Your collaborators can open up the document on the Web. No Apple account or iWork app is needed.
It's not as smooth or as versatile as the offerings in Google Docs. When two people try to change the same iWork document at the same time, everything stops until the document's creator chooses which version to keep. With Docs and Office, each side gets the other's changes. It's not automatic with Office, but at least it works. This is one shortcoming I hope Apple addresses before the online version leaves its test phase.
It's easy to convert Office files to iWork and back, but you might lose formatting and formulas. Numbers replaced some complex formulas I had in Excel with static numbers.
Because of this, and the fact that there are no stand-alone Windows apps, iWork isn't ready yet as a replacement for Office.
A colleague in Korea had some trouble opening a Pages document I tried to share through the Web, so I had to copy text into an email message. And stories I wrote in iWork had to be pasted into a generic format for editing.
Nonetheless, iWork is a good option for personal documents that don't require a lot of sharing. If that's all you need, there's no sweeter word than free.

Cortana voice-assistant app detailed in alleged Windows Phone 8.1 video

cortana_windows_phone_81_os_leaked_video.jpg

Cortana, Microsoft's anticipated answer to Apple's Siri voice-assistant feature, has edged away from its 'rumoured' status, appearing in a two-minute-long alleged walkthrough video, with an interface visibly similar to images leaked on Monday.
The purported Cortana walkthrough video, released by Unleash The Phones, shows the voice-assistant app pinned on the main app window on a Nokia handset. The app, once activated, greets the user by stating "Hi there. I'm Cortana" along with its circular animation at the centre of the screen and is then followed by "I can help make life a bit easier for you."
The leaked initial permission page for Cortana is seen asking for the user's approval to collect data related to location, contacts, voice input, emails, text, browser history, search history, calendar details and others. The video also indicates the app also helps users with reminders, suggestions, tasks "and lot more", and users will have to sign in via their Microsoft accounts.
As seen in Cortana's settings page in the previous leaked image, the video confirms the app's ability to call users by their chosen name.
Further, the leaked walkthrough video shows the Cortana voice-assistant app performing what looks like a first-time setup, asking:
- What are a couple of the most enjoyable parts of your everyday evenings? Pick two
- When you think about food, what's most important to you these days? Pick two
- What are two of your main motivations for going out to an event or activity?
- When you want to catch up on what's going on in the world, which section do you go to first?
Based on the answers to those questions, the leaked walkthrough video shows Cortana suggesting some content on the main app screen, which features "What can I help you with?" prominently. The app is also seen to include a search bar at the bottom of the screen, along with a microphone icon that activates the Cortana voice capturing functionality, waiting for the user to give commands.
It has been also noted that unlike the search button on Windows Phone 8, which activates the Microsoft's Bing Search, Windows Phone 8.1's search button will take user's directly to Cortana.
